Ohio is one of the best states for thrift shopping in the Midwest. From Cleveland to Cincinnati, you can find hundreds of stores packed with clothing, furniture, books, and more. Whether you are hunting for vintage finds or just need affordable everyday items, Ohio has something for every budget.

This guide covers the top thrift store chains in Ohio, the best cities to shop, what to look for, and tips to make the most of every visit.

Major Thrift Store Chains in Ohio

Several large chains operate throughout Ohio. Each one has a slightly different focus and pricing model.

Goodwill Industries

Goodwill is the most common thrift chain in Ohio. The state is served by several regional Goodwill organizations, including Goodwill Industries of Akron, Goodwill Columbus, and Goodwill Greater Cleveland. These stores stock clothing, housewares, electronics, and furniture. Goodwill also runs outlet stores - sometimes called the "Bins" - where items are sold by the pound. Columbus and Cleveland both have Goodwill outlet locations.

The Salvation Army Thrift Stores

The Salvation Army runs thrift stores across Ohio in cities like Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown. Prices tend to be lower than average. The proceeds support local shelter and social service programs. These stores often receive large donations from estate sales and moving households, so furniture finds can be excellent.

Savers and Value Village

Savers operates stores in the greater Cleveland area and in Columbus suburbs. The chain curates its inventory more than other thrift stores, which means higher prices - but also better organization. They run regular color-tag discount sales that can drop prices by 25 to 50 percent.

Ohio Thrift

Ohio Thrift is a regional chain specific to the state. It operates mostly in the Columbus metro area and surrounding suburbs. Stores are large and well-organized, with dedicated sections for clothing, toys, books, and housewares. Ohio Thrift frequently runs half-price sales on select color tags, making it a favorite among regular thrifters.

Community Thrift and Nonprofit Stores

Many local nonprofits run their own shops. Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations (great for tools and building materials), and church-run thrift stores are all common in Ohio. These independent stores often have the lowest prices and the most unique inventory.

Best Ohio Cities for Thrift Shopping

Thrift stores are spread across the state, but some cities have a higher concentration of shops.

Columbus

Columbus is Ohio's largest city and has one of the strongest thrift scenes in the state. The Short North and Clintonville neighborhoods have several vintage and consignment shops. You will also find multiple Goodwill, Ohio Thrift, and Salvation Army locations spread across the metro area. The Columbus Goodwill outlet on the east side is popular with resellers.

Cleveland

Cleveland has a long tradition of secondhand shopping. The Gordon Square and Ohio City neighborhoods feature indie vintage stores and consignment boutiques. Savers locations in the eastern suburbs draw heavy traffic on sale days. The Goodwill outlet in the Cleveland area is also a destination for serious bargain hunters.

Cincinnati

Cincinnati's thrift scene is spread across its many distinct neighborhoods. Norwood, Oakley, and Clifton all have independent thrift and vintage shops. Goodwill and Salvation Army stores are located throughout Hamilton County. The area also has several hospice and hospital-affiliated thrift stores that fund medical programs.

Dayton

Dayton has a strong military community and lots of estate donation activity, which means great finds at Salvation Army and local stores. St. Vincent de Paul Society runs several thrift shops in the Dayton area and is known for low prices on household items.

Toledo and Akron

Both Toledo and Akron have active Goodwill networks and multiple independent stores. Akron's Goodwill supports workforce development programs in Summit County. Toledo's near-downtown neighborhoods have a handful of vintage shops worth visiting on a day trip.

What You Can Find in Ohio Thrift Stores

Ohio thrift stores carry a wide range of items. Here is what shoppers commonly find:

Tips for Thrift Shopping in Ohio

A little strategy goes a long way at any thrift store. Use these tips to shop smarter across Ohio.

Shop on Restock Days

Most Ohio Goodwill and Ohio Thrift locations restock mid-week, usually Tuesday through Thursday. Weekends are busier and inventory gets picked over fast. Arriving early on a weekday gives you first choice of new items.

Watch for Color-Tag Sales

Stores like Ohio Thrift and Savers rotate discount tags by color. When a color goes on sale, everything with that tag drops 50 percent or more. Check the store's website or sign up for emails to track upcoming sales.

Check Multiple Locations

Inventory varies dramatically from store to store. A Goodwill in a wealthy suburb like Dublin or Westerville near Columbus will receive different donations than a store in a lower-income area. Shoppers who visit several locations find better variety overall.

Visit Goodwill Outlet Stores

The Goodwill "Bins" sell items by the pound - usually $1.49 to $1.99 per pound. Columbus and Cleveland both have outlet locations. This is the best option for resellers and bargain hunters who do not mind digging through large bins.

Inspect Before You Buy

Ohio thrift stores are generally final sale. Check clothing for stains, furniture for structural damage, and electronics for missing parts. Most stores do not test electronics before pricing, so buyer awareness is essential.

Donate to Get Priority Access

Some stores give you a discount coupon when you drop off a donation. Goodwill Columbus and Ohio Thrift both offer this. You save money on your purchase and support the mission at the same time.
