Georgia is a great state for thrift shopping. From Atlanta's busy suburbs to the coastal charm of Savannah, thrift stores are everywhere. You can find name-brand clothes, vintage furniture, and household essentials at prices that won't break your budget. This guide helps you find the best stores, cities, and strategies for smart thrifting across the Peach State.

Major Thrift Store Chains in Georgia

Several well-known chains operate throughout Georgia. Each one has a slightly different focus, so it pays to know what each offers.

Goodwill of North Georgia

Goodwill runs dozens of stores across the Atlanta metro area and North Georgia. They accept donations of clothing, electronics, furniture, and books. Goodwill also operates a clearance outlet store in the Atlanta area where items are sold by the pound. This is one of the best places to find hidden gems at rock-bottom prices.

Goodwill Southeast Georgia

A separate Goodwill chapter serves the southern part of the state, including Savannah, Brunswick, and surrounding coastal communities. Both Goodwill chapters use proceeds to fund job training programs for people with disabilities and barriers to employment.

The Salvation Army Thrift Stores

The Salvation Army has thrift stores in Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, Augusta, and other cities. Their stores carry a wide mix of furniture, clothing, and housewares. Revenue supports local community programs like shelter and disaster relief. Many locations offer half-price color tag sales on a rotating weekly schedule.

Savers / Value Village

Savers operates a handful of locations in the Atlanta metro area. This chain is known for its large floor space and organized layout. They sort items by color and category, which makes browsing easier. Savers runs frequent promotions and has a loyalty program that gives you extra discounts over time.

Local and Regional Chains

Beyond the national chains, Georgia has strong local options. Arc Thrift Stores operates in the Atlanta area and benefits adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. St. Vincent de Paul Society runs thrift shops in several Georgia cities, including Atlanta and Savannah. ReStore by Habitat for Humanity locations across the state sell building materials, appliances, and furniture - ideal for home improvement projects.

Best Cities in Georgia for Thrift Shopping

Thrift stores are spread across the state, but some cities have a higher concentration of shops and better inventory turnover.

Atlanta

Atlanta is the thrift capital of Georgia. The metro area has dozens of Goodwill, Salvation Army, Savers, and specialty consignment shops. Neighborhoods like Little Five Points, Decatur, and East Atlanta Village are known for vintage boutiques and eclectic second-hand stores. You will also find estate sale pop-ups and flea markets throughout the year.

Savannah

Savannah has a growing thrift scene. The historic district and nearby Southside neighborhoods have several thrift and consignment options. Goodwill Southeast Georgia and Salvation Army both have locations here. Savannah also attracts antique hunters, so thrift stores often have furniture and decor with Southern character.

Augusta

Augusta has a solid mix of chain thrift stores and locally owned shops. The city's lower cost of living means donations often include quality items from families upgrading their homes. Look for stores near the Regency Mall corridor for the best selection.

Macon

Macon sits in the heart of Georgia and serves as a hub for Central Georgia thrifters. Salvation Army and Goodwill both operate here. Macon also has several church-run thrift stores that charge very low prices and are often overlooked by out-of-town shoppers.

Columbus and Albany

Both cities have Goodwill and Salvation Army locations. These stores serve large military and working-class populations, which means steady donation flow and frequent restocking. Turnover is fast, so visiting more than once per week can pay off.

What You Can Find at Georgia Thrift Stores

Georgia thrift stores carry a wide variety of items. Knowing what each type of store specializes in helps you shop smarter.

  • Clothing: Jeans, t-shirts, dresses, suits, and shoes in all sizes. Atlanta stores get high-end donations from affluent neighborhoods like Buckhead and Sandy Springs.
  • Furniture: Sofas, dressers, dining sets, and shelving. Habitat ReStore locations often have the best furniture finds.
  • Books: Paperbacks, hardcovers, textbooks, and children's books are usually priced under $2.
  • Electronics: Lamps, small appliances, DVD players, and cable boxes show up regularly. Always test electronics before buying if the store allows it.
  • Kitchenware: Pots, pans, dishes, glasses, and small appliances are plentiful. This is one of the best categories for value.
  • Toys and Games: Board games, puzzles, stuffed animals, and action figures are easy to find and very affordable.
  • Decor: Frames, vases, artwork, and seasonal items cycle through thrift stores year-round. Georgia stores get heavy donations after the holiday season.
  • Sports and Outdoor Gear: Golf clubs, bicycles, fishing gear, and camping supplies appear often, especially in suburban Atlanta stores.

Tips for Thrift Shopping in Georgia

A little strategy goes a long way. These tips will help you get more from every trip.

Shop on Discount Days

Most chains run color tag sales. Goodwill rotates a new color every few weeks, discounting that color by 50 percent. Salvation Army often runs weekly half-price sales. Check each store's website or ask staff about the current discount schedule before you shop.

Visit After Holidays and Move-In Seasons

Donation volumes spike in January (post-holiday purges), late spring (spring cleaning), and August (back-to-school and college move-ins). Visit stores two to three weeks after these windows for the best selection, once staff have processed the surge.

Check Multiple Locations

Inventory varies enormously from store to store. A Goodwill in a wealthier suburb like Alpharetta or Roswell will often carry higher-end clothing than a store in a lower-income area. Budget a few hours to hit two or three stores in one trip.

Inspect Items Carefully

Georgia summers are humid, and some donated items show mold, mildew, or odor. Smell fabric items before buying. Check wooden furniture for soft spots. Look for chips, cracks, or missing parts on any item you plan to use daily.

Bring Cash and Small Bills

Most thrift stores take cards, but cash speeds up checkout. Some smaller church shops or pop-up sales are cash only. Small bills also help at estate sales and flea markets where change can be limited.

Sign Up for Loyalty Programs

Savers has a loyalty card that builds points with each purchase. Goodwill emails and text programs announce flash sales. Free sign-ups are worth it if you shop regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any 24-hour or late-night thrift stores in Georgia?

Most Georgia thrift stores close between 6 PM and 9 PM. There are no well-known 24-hour thrift stores in the state. However, online thrift platforms like ThredUp and Poshmark let you shop any time. For in-person late shopping, some Goodwill locations stay open until 9 PM on weekdays. Check Google Maps for current hours before visiting.

Can I donate items at any Georgia thrift store?

Yes, most chains accept walk-in donations during store hours. Goodwill and Salvation Army have dedicated donation drop-off lanes at many locations. Some stores are selective - they may reject items in poor condition, large appliances, or mattresses. Habitat ReStore only accepts building materials, furniture, and appliances. Call ahead if you are donating specialty items.

Do Georgia thrift stores offer senior or military discounts?

Several do. Goodwill of North Georgia offers periodic senior discount days, typically one day per month. Salvation Army stores may honor veteran discounts at the manager's discretion. Savers has offered senior discount days in the past. Policies vary by location, so call your nearest store or check their website to confirm current discount programs before your visit.

What is the best day of the week to thrift shop in Georgia?

Weekday mornings - especially Tuesday through Thursday - are ideal. Staff process weekend donations on Monday and Tuesday, so shelves are freshly stocked by mid-week. Weekends bring higher foot traffic and picked-over racks. If you can shop on a weekday morning, you will have first pick of new arrivals before other shoppers have a chance to grab the best finds.
