Major Thrift Store Chains in Florida

Several large chains operate dozens of locations across Florida. These are reliable spots to start your search.

Goodwill Industries

Goodwill is the most widespread thrift chain in Florida. Goodwill operates several regional branches in Florida, including Goodwill Industries of South Florida and Goodwill of Central Florida. Each branch runs its own stores and donation centers. Prices are generally low, and stock rotates frequently. Many locations also have a Goodwill Outlet (sometimes called a "bins" store) where items are sold by the pound.

The Salvation Army Thrift Stores

The Salvation Army Family Stores are another major presence in Florida. You will find locations in nearly every metro area, from Jacksonville to Fort Lauderdale. They sell clothing, housewares, furniture, and books. Revenue supports local Salvation Army programs like disaster relief and adult rehabilitation. Prices are competitive and sales happen regularly.

Savers and Value Village

Savers and its sister brand Value Village operate for-profit thrift stores with a large selection and consistent organization. Florida has several Savers locations, mostly in the South Florida area including Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Savers buys donations from nonprofits and resells them, keeping the stores well-stocked. They run frequent tag color sales and loyalty programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I donate items to thrift stores in Florida?

Most major chains like Goodwill and Salvation Army have drive-through donation centers attached to or near their stores. You can also drop off at standalone donation bins in parking lots across Florida. Some organizations like Habitat for Humanity ReStore offer free pickup for large furniture items. Call ahead or visit the store's website to confirm what items they currently accept.

Are thrift stores in Florida more expensive than in other states?

Prices vary by location and chain. Stores in wealthier areas like Boca Raton or Naples sometimes price items higher because they know their inventory is premium. Goodwill Outlet bins are the cheapest option in the state. Overall, Florida thrift prices are comparable to national averages, with room for great deals if you know where to look and when to shop.

Do Florida thrift stores have senior or military discounts?

Many do. Goodwill stores in Florida often offer senior discounts on specific days of the week, typically Monday or Tuesday. The Salvation Army also runs periodic discount days for seniors and veterans. Always ask at the register before you pay. Some locations post their discount schedule near the entrance or on a chalkboard at the checkout counter.

What is the best time of year to thrift shop in Florida?

The fall and winter months bring the best inventory. Snowbird season starts in October and runs through March. Retiring and relocating residents donate heavily during this period. Spring also sees a bump around college graduation. Summer is slower for donations, but stores often run clearance sales to move excess inventory - which can mean steep discounts on items that have been sitting a while.
