Mississippi has hundreds of thrift stores spread across the state. Whether you live in Jackson, Biloxi, or a small town, you can find great deals on clothes, furniture, and household items. This guide will help you locate the best thrift stores in Mississippi and make the most of every shopping trip.

Major Thrift Store Chains in Mississippi

Several national chains operate throughout Mississippi. These stores are well-stocked and easy to find in most cities.

Goodwill Industries is one of the most common thrift chains in the state. Mississippi Valley Goodwill serves the northern part of Mississippi, while other regional Goodwill chapters cover central and southern areas. Goodwill stores are known for their large selection of clothing, books, and small electronics. They restock shelves daily, so there is always something new to find.

The Salvation Army Family Stores operate in several Mississippi cities including Jackson, Hattiesburg, and Gulfport. These stores sell donated goods and use the proceeds to fund community programs. You can find furniture, appliances, and clothing at Salvation Army locations throughout the state.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores are another strong option in Mississippi. These stores focus on home improvement items. You can find doors, cabinets, lumber, flooring, and appliances at deep discounts. ReStores operate in Jackson, Tupelo, Biloxi, and other cities across the state.

Note that Savers and Value Village do not currently have locations in Mississippi. These chains are concentrated in other regions of the country. However, local and independent thrift stores in Mississippi often offer comparable selection and pricing.

Local and Regional Thrift Stores in Mississippi

Some of the best deals in Mississippi come from locally owned thrift stores and nonprofit shops. These stores often support specific community causes and are deeply connected to their neighborhoods.

Arc of Mississippi operates thrift stores in several locations. This organization supports people with intellectual disabilities. Shopping at Arc stores directly funds their programs and job training efforts.

St. Vincent de Paul Society runs thrift stores in cities like Jackson and Biloxi. These stores are connected to Catholic Charities and serve low-income families across the state. Prices are typically very low, and staff are friendly and helpful.

Many churches throughout Mississippi operate their own thrift or resale shops. These community-run stores often have limited hours but excellent prices. Keep an eye out for signs in your neighborhood or search local Facebook community groups for listings.

Cities with the Most Thrift Stores in Mississippi

Thrift stores are spread across Mississippi, but certain cities have larger concentrations of stores to explore.

Jackson is the state capital and the largest city in Mississippi. It has the highest number of thrift stores in the state. You will find multiple Goodwill and Salvation Army locations, as well as many independent stores. The Flowood and Ridgeland areas near Jackson also have several options.

Gulfport and Biloxi on the Gulf Coast have a strong thrift store scene. The coastal area draws a large population and tourist traffic, which means plenty of donated goods cycle through local stores. This area often has furniture, beach items, and home decor in good supply.

Hattiesburg is home to the University of Southern Mississippi. College towns tend to have active thrift markets. Students donate items at the end of each semester, making summer and December especially good times to shop here.

Tupelo in northeast Mississippi has several solid thrift options including a ReStore and local charity shops. The city has a strong manufacturing and working-class community, which keeps donations flowing steadily.

Meridian, Vicksburg, Greenville, and Columbus also have Goodwill or Salvation Army locations and local charity stores. Smaller cities throughout the Delta region have thrift stores tied to churches and social service organizations.

What You Can Find at Mississippi Thrift Stores

Mississippi thrift stores carry a wide variety of items. Here is a breakdown of what you are likely to find:

  • Clothing and shoes - Casual wear, work clothes, children's clothing, and sometimes formal wear. Sizes vary widely.
  • Furniture - Sofas, dressers, tables, chairs, and bed frames. Larger Goodwill and Salvation Army stores carry the most furniture.
  • Kitchenware - Pots, pans, dishes, glasses, and small appliances like blenders and toasters.
  • Books - Fiction, nonfiction, children's books, textbooks, and religious texts are almost always available in large quantities.
  • Electronics - Older TVs, DVD players, small speakers, and cables. Always test electronics before buying if the store allows it.
  • Toys and games - Board games, stuffed animals, action figures, and sporting equipment.
  • Home decor - Picture frames, lamps, vases, curtains, and decorative items. Mississippi stores often carry Southern-style decor unique to the region.
  • Tools and hardware - Hand tools, garden tools, and workshop supplies, especially at ReStore locations.

The Gulf Coast stores tend to have more outdoor and beach-related items. Stores near college campuses often have extra books and small apartment essentials.

Tips for Thrift Shopping in Mississippi

A few smart habits will help you find better items and save more money at Mississippi thrift stores.

Go early in the week. Most thrift stores put out new donations on Mondays and Tuesdays. Weekends are busier and items get picked over faster. Arriving right when the store opens gives you the first look at new inventory.

Check sale tags and color-coded pricing. Many Goodwill and Salvation Army stores use a color-tag rotation system. Each week, a certain tag color is marked 50 percent off or more. Ask staff which color is on sale that week before you start browsing.

Look beyond the clothing section. Many shoppers skip straight to clothes. The housewares, books, and furniture sections often hide excellent finds that others overlook.

Inspect items carefully. Most thrift stores in Mississippi do not accept returns. Check clothing for stains, tears, or missing buttons. Test zippers and buttons. Look at furniture joints for cracks or wobble.

Bring cash and small bills. Some smaller charity thrift stores in rural Mississippi prefer cash. Having small bills makes checkout faster and easier.

Donate to get better karma and deals. Many Goodwill locations offer a discount coupon when you drop off a donation. You help your community and save money at the same time.

Visit multiple stores in one trip. In cities like Jackson and Gulfport, thrift stores are often grouped near each other. Plan a route that hits two or three stores in one outing to maximize your chances of finding great items.
